We are happy to be together again, Mandarin ducks in pairs glide on the pond's clear water, Red lotus flowers bloom on the same green stem. Together in pairs, with affection and love, A gentle breeze brushes the flowers, Tenderness and sweetness fill the world. |
This song, entitled "Moonlight," was sung by leading lady, Gong Li, in Zhang Yimou's award-winning motion picture, Shanghai Triad, set in Shanghai in the 1930s. The film is based on a Chinese novel. The sources of the melody and lyrics are unknown, but the song dates back more than 30 years. Mandarin ducks symbolize conjugal fidelity. |
