Blow the Man Down

Melody -

Oh! Blow the man down, bullies. Blow the man down.
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
Oh! Blow the man down bullies. Blow him right down.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

As I was a-walking down Paradise Street,
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
A pretty young damsel I wanted to meet,
Walked with a man, oh blow the man down.

I says to her, "Polly, and how d'ye do?"
Way ay! Blow the man down!
She says, "None the better for seeing of you!"
Oh gimme some time to blow the man down.

Oh we'll blow the man up and we'll blow the man down,
Way ay! Blow the man down!
We'll blow him away into Liverpool Town,
Oh gimme some time to blow the man down.

I swung to the left and swung to the right,
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
But he was a guy who sure knew how to fight,
None of my blows could blow the man down.

The adorable dame took the man by the arm,
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
Took off with her, her with all of her charm,
I only lay, just flat on the ground.

All ye sailors take warning before you set sail,
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
If he's strong as an ox and big as a whale,
Think twice before you blow the man down.
2. Come all ye young fellers that follows the sea.
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
I'll sing ye a song if ye'll listen to me.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

3. 'Twas in a Black Baller I first served my time.
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
And in a Black Baller I wasted my prime.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

4. 'Tis when a Black Baller's preparing for sea.
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
The sights in the forecastle is funny to see.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

5. With sodgers and tailors and Dutchmen and all.
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
As ships for prime seamen aboard the Black Ball.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

6. But when the Black Baller gets o' the land.
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
It's then as ye'll hear the sharp word o' command.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

7. Oh! It's muster ye sodgers and tailors and sich.
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
And hear your name called by a son of a bitch.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

8. It's "fore-topsail halyards", the Mate he will roar.
Way! Hey! Blow the man down!
Oh, lay along smartly, you son of a whore.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

9. Oh, lay along smartly each lousy recruit.
Way! Hey! Blow th' man down!
Or it's lifted ye'll be with the toe of a boot.
Give us the time and we'll blow the man down!

This halliard shanty comes from the old days of the Atlantic packet ships. Then 'blow' meant 'strike' and the song refers to the rough justice aboard at a time when the third mate was commonly called the 'third blower and striker'. References to Liverpool's 'Paradise Street' abound in shanties of the period. It must have been one of the most famous streets in all the world sung about wherever sailors were found. The similarity between the openings of 'Blow the Man Down' and the German Christmas Carol 'Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht' must be purely coincidental !-)
