Hemolele wale i ka m?lie. Kuahiwi nani, Wai'ale'ale, Lei ana i ka mokihana. Hanohano wale 'o Hanalei I ka ua nui h?'eha 'ili I ka wai o 'u'inakolo I ka poli o Namolokama. Maika'i n? Kaua'i, Hemolele i ka m?lie. Kuahiwi Wai'ale'ale Lei ana i ka mokihana. |
How perfect in its serenity. The splendid mountain is Wai'ale'ale. The lei is the mokihana. How magnificent is Hanalei With the great rain that pains the skin, And the rippling water In the heart of Namolokama. How beautiful in Kaua'i, How perfect in its serenity. The splendid mountain is Wai'ale'ale. The lei is the mokihana. |
The song is said to be based on a chant composed by Kapa'akea which honored Kaumuali'i, the ruler of Kaua'i before Kamehameha Ekahi unified the islands. Henry Waia'u composed the music based on the chant. Each of the Hawaiian islands has an official lei, designated by the Territorial Legislature in 1923. The lei for Kaua'i is made from the fruits of the mokihana, a tree found only on Kaua'i. Namolokama is a waterfall in Hanalei. |
