The song is said to be based on a chant composed by Kapa'akea which honored Kaumuali'i, the ruler of Kaua'i before Kamehameha Ekahi unified the islands. Henry Waia'u composed the music based on the chant. Each of the Hawaiian islands has an official lei, designated by the Territorial Legislature in 1923. The lei for Kaua'i is made from the fruits of the mokihana, a tree found only on Kaua'i. Namolokama is a waterfall in Hanalei. |
